Degenerate Dimension Question Empty Degenerate Dimension Question

Post  scabral Tue Mar 05, 2013 4:25 pm

I'm designing a Daily Snapshot Fact table to store Premium information (Written Premium, Earned, Unearned, etc...) for homeowner's insurance policies. Each policy has a deductible amount of either $500, $1000, or $1500 that we would like to track and analyze. It seems like a dimension even though it's a numeric field, but i don't think it requires it's own dimension table. Would this be something that would be stored as a degenerate dimension in the fact table?

The deductible could also change at any time if the policyholder decided to take a higher/lower deductible.

thanks

No. A degenerate dimension would be something akin to a Policy Identifier. It is an source system identifier used commonly to access the fact, e.g. Order Identifier, Loan Identifier, etc.

Yes. It is an attribute of a policy.
