Inventory Snapshot

Hi,

I have to produce an Inventory Snapshot fact table that will need to be by Date, Product and Location. That should be easy enough.

However, there are lots of other dimensions that I've found out in the source system, such as the Supplier, Delivery Method, Delivery Vessel, Departure Port, Delivery Port, the PO, the Receipt Number etc.

Is there any reason why Supplier (for example) can't go in a Snapshot fact? All you would be holiding is the balance of inventory receieved from a supplier each day. I know that data volumes would probably be citied as a potential isssue, but is there any reason (if Supplier is suitable) not to include the others in the snapshot, such as Delivery Method?

If the business segregates inventory by supplier, then yes, it would be an appropriate dimension. It is also not unusual to include bin or lot numbers.
