What is the criteria to decide on Extraction vs Report (ing) Empty What is the criteria to decide on Extraction vs Report (ing)

Hi,

Most of our reports generates more than 100K of records at the participant level;

Our thought is in those scenario's users should use Data Extraction tools like Informatica instead of extracting the data through reporting tools like Cognos;

I am trying to get clear on what should be the criteria to decide on whether to use Data Extraction tool vs reporting tool;

Appreciate if somebody can throw some insights on this topic

Thanks

In what context? Are these reports against a data warehouse or an operational system?

If it is against a data warehouse, what advantage do you believe you would gain if you did an extraction? A report is an extraction. What's the difference?

If you are talking about an operational system, then you may consider creating a data warehouse. The decision to actually build a data warehouse would usually occur after there have been serious problems with users running very large reports while the rest of the company is trying to conduct business.
