Estimating star schema & ETL effort

We don't have weeks to go study the systems and the data structures. Unfortunately, we don't have time to understand the data in detail and have a data model, source systems to have a detail estimate of the ETL effort.
What is the best way of estimating work effort to design data model and ETL effort? Any guidance?
