Episode, Item modelling, Empty Episode, Item modelling,

A general DM question for modelling Episode and Item data within health models. This question may more broadly relate to general Header and Item analysis in other non health models.
Our requirements are for both,
1. Episode analysis - Length of Stay, DRG, Admission date, Discharge date, Episode cost, Provider etc.
2. Item analysis – Episode, Number of items, Item cost, Provider, Service date etc.
Due to the differing grain of the requirements we expect 2 facts will be created, an Episode fact and an Item fact.

Our question is how best to create the relation between the two process models to facilitate the Episode relationship?

Is the simple answer to create an Episode dimension which contains a managed Episode ID. If this is the case we end up with an Episode dimension growing at the same rate as the Episode fact and a tendency to move the Episode Admission date, Discharge date and other Episode attributes to the dimension rather than resolving these in the Episode fact.

We’d be keen to hear other’s view on this scenario.

By not creating a relationship between the two process models.

Simply carry dimensional FK's in the item table that would also be found in the episode table. Treat episode ID as a degenerate dimension.
