Modelling Heterogeneous Product table

Post  dcow on Fri Mar 05, 2010 6:29 am

My Modelling of products has led me to a Heterogeneous Product situation

such that if have 10 Product , we
have 11 Product dimensions: 1 simplified dimension describing all the productsand 10
extended dimensions describing the custom products.

The design is something like below

CoreProduct Dimension
ProductKEY IDENTITY INT
ProductType
..Common Attributes

ProductTypeA Dimension
ProductKey FK
..specific Attributes

ProductTypeB Dimension
ProductKey FK
.. Custom specific Attributes

The Problem i am encountering is how to handle SCD2 changes within the Custom product dimension. From what i can see this sort of design woul result in a row needing to be aadded to the Core product table. Am i on the right track here?

What if the change is in sub dimension? Will I create two new records one in the main and one in the sub dimension.
