Student GPA Fact or Dimension Empty Student GPA Fact or Dimension

Post  BIDW Thu Mar 12, 2015 1:53 am

I have a requirement to report on student GPA's. In my star schema I have term, course, student and student term (attributes of student per term e.g. college, level etc) as dimensions. I have one fact table which records student course registration. The GPA is generally calculated AT THE END OF EACH TERM. my question is where does GPA related information go. Is it a separate fact table by itself or I could include GPA information as attributes of the student term dimension table.

Thanks

It can be both. From one standpoint, it is an aggregation of the course facts. But it can also be viewed as a characterization of the student.

Hi ,

It can be a separate fact if you want to see the history of the student's GPA, if you are not interested in seeing the history but only the current GPA then it can be made as a part of student dimension.
