With Data Warehousing, Business Intelligence and Analytics emerging as three fields, several companies have started to understand and differentiate focus on each one of these.

At most organizations Data Warehousing does not get a seat on table with CXO. It is an essential part of technology services still budget, attention and focus to do it right is generally not on priority list.

Business Intelligence and Analytics for a several companies is a business function rather than a technology service. Companies who are able to understand the difference do begin to build their competency around it. Outsourcing such service may not always be a smart idea. Companies do need to manage their core data on their own with in-house expertise and knowledge about data, its content and its hidden powers.

Actually DW and BI have been considered separate (but dependent) fields for the last 15 years or so.  The growth of Analytics as a field in its own right has come about as BI has expanded and matured from simply producing reports.

Admittedly, DW has taken a back seat in a lot of organizations.  There are a lot of reasons for this, but for the most part because the lack of realization that a solid DW foundation is critical for ongoing success of BI and Analytics operations.

The biggest challenge for DW efforts is to reduce the time to implement and deploy a DW solution.
