Type 7 SCD Empty Type 7 SCD

Post  sed78 Mon Oct 28, 2013 11:04 pm

I’m new around here, so first of all: Hi!

I am currently designing our data warehouse and am investigating ways to persist historical data.

I have been looking at the different types of SCD’s and am very taken by Type 7. It appears to be an elegant solution to many of the issues raised others. This said, I have not been able to find many references to type 7, or many examples of where they are used.

My question: Are type 7 SCD’s known by another name? Also, how widely used are they? I would like to avoid a design with little information available.

Thanks for your help

I had always referred to it as having a type 1 and a type 2 dimension.  Nothing new, and it can be useful.

I see Ralph (or Margy) decided to put numbers to them, so be it...  But given there are a lot of numbers flying around (such as on Wiki) things will be confusing for a while.

I've used that approach in the past with good success.
