Hundreds of columns in a flattenned dimensional hierarchy

Post  Duaneep on Wed Jul 17, 2013 11:43 pm

Hi,
I have a fixed 5 level hierarchy of dimensions.  To avoid snowflaking I'd normally push the upper levels down to the lowest.  However, there are a lot of columns.
Level 1 - Top - 20
Level 2 - 40
Level 3 - 30
Level 4 - 150
Level 5 - 200

This would give a 440 column dimension.  Is this ok, or a bit too much?

Thanks, Duane

The # of columns seems to high but its still better than having a snowflake. I have worked on 250-300 attributes in financial DW tables.
