Type 3 Slowly Changing Dimension

I am trying to find a best example / scenario where a type 3 scd would make more sense than a type 2. In my understanding type 3 can easily be derived from type 2.
If anybody has used type 3 dimension instead of type 2, please let me know the scenario and some reasoning why you used that.

the only reason i would use type 3 is if i were interested in the last value or last fixed number values of an attribute.
generally speaking they have very little utility in real world data marts.

Perhaps if you wanted to track the changing of 1 column. This could be useful for tracking customer upgrades downgrades where you wanted to know the customer's current product as well as their previous product.

or if the Company is acquired or acquires another company. If you want to maintain previous codes for reference. As mentioned by others Type 3 is rarely used, however certain situations do call for it.
