Data Dictionary template

Post  kclark on Fri Oct 05, 2012 3:36 pm

Hi All,

There was a data dictionary spreadsheet template which aided in designing a data mart on this site. Does anyone know where it is?

Thanks.

You are welcome Krystal. That spreadsheet is my all time favourite output of the Kimball Group - I use it every day.

LOL! I know! Quick question on using the spreadsheet. When you had the finished dictionary over to your client as a deliverable, do you copy only the necessary spreadsheets (facts, dims, and models) or the entire workbook complete with all of the Kimball logos?

Thanks,
Krystal

I leave them with the whole thing. I encourage them to keep using it to document changes and additions to their model as a living document. Actually usually I'm the one doing those changes and additions for them, so I guess I encourage myself ...

Even when your datamart has matured from DROP / CREATE to ALTER, the DDL scripts produced are useful to get consistent column definitions.

I do often save a copy as a non-Macro workbook, but not to protect or obscure the code, just to make it easier to access/share. Sometimes Excel files with Macros get blocked (e.g. by SharePoint, Email) or people are (rightly) hesistant to open them.

As a freelance consultant my strategy is to share anything I know that might help - if anything I'm an "oversharer". Its working out OK - I think it reduces stress all round.
