Measures based on different hierarchy levels

Post  IIT'ian on Mon Aug 06, 2012 5:49 pm

Below is our current dimension hierarchy -

Location Hierarchy : CHAIN -> Operation -> Market -> District -> Community -> Store..
I have 8 fact tables based on different categories Product, Employee, Rx etc.; so each category has it's own metrics. But, the metrics differ based on the level in the location hierarchy.

Product fact table can have 4 metrics at chain level and 2 metrics at market level.
Similarly the other fact tables.

How should I model my fact and dimension tables for addressing the above scenario. Please advice.

You need to build separate fact tables at the varying grains. If the metrics are not the same grain, you can't put them in the same fact table.
