All tables must be in DM

Post  rf001 on Sat Jun 16, 2012 9:23 pm

Hello,

Suppose we have to migrate a relational database to a dimensional model. We have to ensure that all the columns of all tables in the relational database are present in the target DM. What do you suggest to do if a table does not fit in any star?

regards,

The purpose of a data warehouse is not to keep stuff around forever, that is what backups are for. It is for performing analytics. You don't need to bring in everything.

I am thinking on a bit different lines:

Normalization makes a database model very complex to understand. Lets say an organization wants to migrate its relational database to dimensional modeling for the sake of making it simple to understand and easy to access in the future. Future users may query it only after figuring out the fact tables.

Do you think it is worthy to do? If yes, what are the things to be careful of?

thanks for such a prompt response.
