Account Type Empty Account Type

Post  tim_goodsell Tue Feb 07, 2012 8:08 pm

Hello

My warehouse will have an Account dimension with one of its attributes being Account Type

The An accounts Account Type can be either A, B, C. However the Account Type can be part of a group and a parent group

Parent Group Group Account Type
X R A
Y S B
Z T C

Is it best to have a snowflake where you have an account type dimension (containing the parent group, group and account type) and have an account type key in the account dimension or is it better to flatten everyting into the account dimension

Regards

Tim

Just flatten it into the account dimension. Don't snowflake. If you would rather have an account type dimension, you can put an FK in the account dimension, but use it only during ETL to populate the account type FK in the fact table. Do not use it to access the account type dimension during a query.
